CFA Announces First Quarterly Film Challenge

This coming November, Cinematography for Actors (CFA) is launching its first-ever Quarterly Film Challenge, an exciting opportunity for filmmakers to push their creative limits and produce films with industry support. As part of CFA’s mission to nurture filmmakers, this challenge provides access to short-term gear loans, publicity assistance, and a collaborative filmmaking experience.

What is the CFA Quarterly Film Challenge?

From November 8th to 11th, filmmakers are invited to participate in a 72-hour film challenge where they will shoot, edit, and submit a short film. This fast-paced challenge is designed to give participants hands-on experience, putting their skills and creativity to the test in a limited time frame.

Whether you're an experienced filmmaker or an aspiring creative looking to make your mark, this challenge offers the perfect environment to learn, grow, and produce outstanding work within a supportive community.

How Does It Work?

1. Sign-up Process

To join, filmmakers and participants must register before October 15th. Registration is open to both actors and crew members, and you don’t need a full team to sign up. After registering, you’ll be added to a collaboration sheet where you can connect with others looking to participate. This sheet will provide details about fellow filmmakers and crew members, helping you build a well-rounded team based on your project’s needs.

This platform is perfect for those seeking collaborators—whether you’re a director in need of a cinematographer, a producer looking for an editor, or an actor excited to join a creative crew. CFA encourages everyone to explore these partnerships, as collaboration is a key aspect of the challenge.

Once registered, participants will also receive a detailed sheet one week before the challenge, outlining the technical, practical, and creative guidelines needed to prepare for the event.

2. Film Creation

The challenge officially begins on November 8th, giving participants exactly 72 hours to create a short film that must be under 7 minutes. This fast-paced environment allows filmmakers to test their abilities under time constraints while fostering creativity and collaboration.

Additionally, filmmakers will have access to short-term gear and software loans from our sponsors. A limited number of complimentary equipment packages will be available, with insurance provided through our partner We Make Movies. Insurance prices range from $75-$150, depending on the gear used and the sponsor involvement in each challenge.

3. Submission

Once your film is completed, it must be submitted according to the format requirements outlined in the pre-challenge guidelines. Be sure to follow these instructions carefully to ensure that your submission is valid.

The deadline for submission is at the end of the 72-hour window, and all films must be delivered within this time frame.

Prizes for the Challenge

This year, we are thrilled to announce the first-ever prizes for the CFA Quarterly Film Challenge, generously provided by our sponsor, Blackmagic Design (@blackmagicnewsofficial). These prizes include:

  • Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K

  • Micro Color Panel

  • 3 x DaVinci Resolve Studio Seats

These professional-grade tools offer filmmakers an incredible opportunity to enhance their craft and bring their future projects to life.

In addition to these prizes, selected films will be featured across CFA platforms and receive a dedicated write-up on the League of Filmmakers. This gives participants a chance to showcase their work to a larger audience and gain recognition within the film community.
